A media gateway is a device that converts one type of digital media, like TDM voice, to another type of media, like VoIP. Media gateways are used by many businesses to convert their legacy TDM PBX voice traffic to VoIP, allowing for a cost effective migration to SIP. Likewise, carriers deploy media gateways in their networks to convert voice traffic to and from IP and TDM networks.
While the main function of the media gateway is to convert from one media type to another, other functions performed may include features like call waiting, hunting, call forwarding, echo cancellation and voice compression.
As part of Broadvox’s network infrastructure, media gateways are used to originate and terminate millions of calls every day to and from the PSTN. Furthermore, Broadvox has certified many media gateways for interoperability with our network, thus enabling our customers and partners to choose the best equipment for their application.
